{"id":2388,"date":"2024-06-03T22:21:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-03T22:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cryptd.in\/matter-labs-abandons-zk-trademark-following-community-outcry\/"},"modified":"2024-06-03T22:21:00","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T22:21:00","slug":"matter-labs-abandons-zk-trademark-following-community-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cryptd.in\/nl\/matter-labs-abandons-zk-trademark-following-community-outcry\/","title":{"rendered":"Matter Labs Abandons \u2018ZK\u2019 Trademark Following Community Outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Matter Labs, the developer behind the ZkSync Ethereum Layer 2 network, has decided to abandon its efforts to trademark the term \u201cZK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an update on June 3rd, Matter Labs said its decision to abandon its efforts to trademark the term \u201cZK\u201d stems from the reasoning that it is \u201cimpossible to agree on a group of people perceived as credibly neutral by nearly everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Matter Labs Drops \u201cZK\u201d Trademark Effort<\/h2>\n<p>Matter Labs had previously filed to trademark the term zero-knowledge (ZK) in nine countries, subsequently clashing with Polyhedra Network over using ZK as a ticker symbol. This resulted in a week-long dispute with Polyhedra Network condemning Matter Labs\u2019 actions and accusing them of bullying and undermining the principles of Web3.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after this, several industry players backed Polyhedra and argued that such a move by Matter Labs would privatize a public resource.<\/p>\n<p>As backlash intensified, Matter Labs dropped its trademark plans and explained, in an official <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/the_matter_labs\/status\/1797343779189403825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, that what might work within the Ethereum ecosystem wouldn\u2019t necessarily be applicable or effective on a global scale, given the diversity of perspectives, interests, and stakeholders involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud to be a part of a movement that cares so deeply about cypherpunk values. And we are incredibly grateful to the zksync community in particular for the thousands of messages of support we received, once again affirming that community is everything.
