Digital asset markets are slogging through a choppy 2026, with prices under pressure even as the underlying plumbing of the system quietly advances \u2014 from tokenization on Wall Street to quantum\u2011resistant upgrades on Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A new mid\u2011year update<\/a> from Fidelity Digital Assets frames the year as one of \u201cstructural retooling,\u201d where regulatory progress, infrastructure build\u2011out, and institutional experimentation are doing more work than headline prices suggest.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin is down about<\/a> 13% year\u2011to\u2011date amid liquidation\u2011driven deleveraging, stubborn inflation and geopolitical shocks that have pushed rate expectations back toward tightening, Fidelity notes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yet the asset has outperformed many traditional benchmarks during recent flare\u2011ups in global conflict, hinting at renewed demand for liquid, politically neutral assets when stress spikes.<\/p>\n

At the same time, demand for crypto exposure through mainstream channels remains resilient<\/a>, with options on spot BTC exchange\u2011traded products\u2014launched only in late 2024\u2014now seeing open interest comparable to options settled in native bitcoin, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tokenization is another quiet growth area, as large financial institutions roll out blockchain\u2011based products and major exchanges take stakes in digital\u2011asset platforms, helped by joint SEC\u2013CFTC guidance and draft legislation like the CLARITY Act that aim to formalize a digital\u2011asset taxonomy.<\/p>\n

AI, mining and Bitcoin\u2019s security debate<\/h2>\n

One of the more novel developments so far this year is the interplay between AI and bitcoin mining capacity. Fidelity noted the 30\u2011day average hash rate and mining difficulty<\/a> are each down roughly 8\u20139% from earlier highs\u2014before a modest rebound\u2014suggesting miners may be redirecting power and infrastructure toward higher\u2011margin AI data center workloads.<\/p>\n

On\u2011chain, the firm reports that expanding the amount of data allowed in Bitcoin\u2019s OP_RETURN field has not triggered the feared \u201cblockchain bloat,\u201d with block sizes and utilization still tracking within projected ranges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instead, attention has turned to node diversity and long\u2011term security: Bitcoin Core still accounts for about 77% of nodes versus roughly 17% for Bitcoin Knots, raising what Fidelity calls a non\u2011zero risk of fragmentation under certain conditions even as work accelerates on proposals like quantum\u2011resistant Pay\u2011to\u2011Merkle\u2011Root outputs.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin vs. gold<\/h2>\n

Outside crypto, gold has reasserted<\/a> itself as a preferred macro hedge, surging nearly 30% earlier in the year before settling back to a still solid 3\u20134% gain year\u2011to\u2011date, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fidelity points to persistently strong central\u2011bank buying and evidence that gold is overtaking U.S. dollars and Treasuries in some reserve mixes, alongside isolated but symbolically important moves such as Iran accepting<\/a> BTC for certain payments tied to traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
